Support Us
It is only through as many people as possible in our community, whether that is a past or present student, parent or business, becoming involved and working together that our goals will be met. We hope that as many members of the Southend High School for Boys community as possible will contribute to the Trust at a level or in the most appropriate way for them. Giving doesn't just have to be money but can also be of time or items that might from time to time be needed by the Charitable Trust or School, or by attendance at one of our fundraising events.
Major benefactors may have the opportunity to associate their names – or the names of their families or companies – with various projects or developments of which their donation forms a significant part.
Support is being sought at all levels, and every donation – regardless of amount – will be commemorated in a special donors’ book at the School.
Read more below about how you can support us, and please get in contact to discuss further.
See our donate page (and Gift Aid your donation if applicable).
Want to support us by volunteering, or by contributing financially to the Charitable Trust?
Please send us a message and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
However you choose to contribute, thank you for the support of SHSB Charitable Trust
Tax-efficient giving
The Southend High School for Boys Charitable Trust (registered charity number 1211479) can recover tax via the Gift Aid scheme on donations made by UK taxpayers. This increases the value of the gift to the Charitable Trust whilst offering the potential to decrease the cost to donors through tax recovery.
The best ways of giving are generally:
- by giving a series of regular gifts
- one or more lump sum gifts
- through a company (companies can offset their donations against their liability for Corporation Tax)
- through a tax-exempt charitable trust or foundation
- by direct transfer of assets, such as stocks, shares, property and works of art
Regular Payments & Single gifts
Regular payments under the gift aid scheme offer a most effective way for many donors to give their support to the school as they enable significant funds to be given over time by way of monthly, quarterly or annual contributions. Under the gift aid scheme you can spread the cost of your gift over a number of years whilst enabling the school to recover the income tax you have already paid.
With the basic rate of income tax at 20%, for every £100 you donate to the SHSB Charitable Trust, the trust will receive an extra £25 at no extra cost to you. Higher and additional rate taxpayers can also claim further relief via their annual tax returns.
Higher & additional rate tax relief
If you are a higher or additional rate taxpayer, you can claim tax relief via your annual tax return on all gifts made via the gift aid scheme. For a higher rate taxpayer the amount recoverable from HMRC is calculated as 20% of the gross value of your gift. Additional rate taxpayers can recover 25% of the gross value.

Major Gifts
In order to meet its challenging targets, the SHSB Charitable Trust seeks to raise a number of substantial, pace-setting gifts, as illustrated in the table below.

Leaving a gift in your Will
If you haven’t made a legacy but would like to consider doing so, it is an excellent way to provide for the people who are important to you, to help causes you support and to acknowledge the influences that have shaped your life. By remembering SHSB Charitable Trust in your Will, you can ensure the school continues to move forward into the future with confidence. By making a charitable gift in this way, you can also reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. All legacies to the trust are free from Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax.
Making a legacy pledge to SHSB Charitable Trust is straightforward. It can be done either when making a Will for the first time or, by adding a codicil to an existing Will. Alternatively, or additionally, if you become a beneficiary of someone else's Will, you could consider transferring the whole or part of that inheritance to SHSB Charitable Trust using a deed of variation. The value thus transferred would be exempt from the Inheritance Tax which would otherwise have been payable out of the estate in respect of that value. We suggest you contact your solicitor to discuss these options further.
Making a legacy to SHSB Charitable Trust is essentially a private matter, but it would be helpful to the school and trust to know you have done so. Accordingly, we are inviting those who have already made legacies in favour of the school to update us on their current intentions and to give us the opportunity of showing our appreciation. Any information given will be treated in the strictest confidence. You can update us using our online Contact Us form.
